As much as I love Lady GaGa and admire her boundless talents, I think it’s safe to say the singer has committed her fair share of fashion faux pas. Her latest crime, however, is simply unpardonable. One look at the photo below illustrates the cardinal rule every handbag lover knows by heart – NEVER WRITE ON YOUR DESIGNER BAG!!!
C’mon, writing “I Love Little Monsters” in Japanese on your expensive white Hermés Birkin bag is just about the dumbest (and juvenile) thing anyone who appreciates fashion can do. Perhaps this bag was just a drop in the bucket for her in terms of money, but the time, artistry and craftsmanship that goes into making a Birkin merits more respect than she demonstrated. If Lady GaGa wished to acknowledge her Japanese fans, taking out a billboard ad on one of the busiest streets in Tokyo would have been a more appropriate choice. I love you GaGa Girl, but this time you crossed the line. Tisk, tisk, tisk (yes, I’m wagging my finger at the screen as I write this).

I know that GaGa is all about breaking with convention but it makes me cringe to think of writing on a Birkin! I can only hope that it's dry erase marker.

Many women buy designer bags as status symbols, not because they admire the artistry and craftsmanship that went into creating it. I agree that she doesn't need to be precious with her possessions. However, intentionally writing on your bag is tastless and not the same as scuffing the corners or accidentaly getting a pen mark on it. Bags will never remain pristine, but purposly defacing them is infantile.
Would it be OK for me to purchase a Monet painting for my own private collection, and then turn around an splatter paint on it for what ever reason I might have? Taking a work of art (in the case of my example, a painting) and defacing it is analgous to taking a work of art (in GaGa's case, a Birkin) and writing all over it. Can she do it? Sure. Should she do it? IMO, certainly not.

she admires the thought and design that went into the bag, thats why she owns it… but fashion isn't fascism, she isnt precious about her items and doesn't need to be. Keeping designer items pristine is artificial and makes one think there is something to prove; it's tasteless. She is brilliant.
